Day 6

Scripture to Read: 1 Timothy 6:9

It seems like everywhere we turn, there is a new way to “get rich quick.” Seeking to get rich in this life is not anything new. It may seem new to us, but getting rich in this life is something mankind has struggled with since the Garden of Eden. For even in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:8-9), where God’s incredible gifts met Adam and Eve’s every need and where they got to walk with God (Genesis 3:8), did not seem like it was enough when Eve was tempted with the fruit of “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” We, as humans, live in an earthly shell that desires the junk of this world. We actually struggle with the temptation of wanting more riches. We think that riches and stuff will satisfy our longings. But we all know from experience that even when we end up getting the things we thought we wanted so badly, after we have that stuff for a while, it does not satisfy us any longer. God’s warning in 1 Timothy 6:9 is for everyone who struggles with the temptation to get rich in this life. God tells us that when we fall into that temptation of wanting the riches of this life, it only leads to a trap that ends in destruction and ruin. It is not wrong to have stuff, but God does not want us seeking the stuff of this world to find our contentment, peace, satisfaction, etc., because the stuff of this life can never meet our deepest needs.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you about seeking the riches of this world? 2. How are you guarding your heart from the temptation of thinking you need more stuff from this world?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God has been richly pouring His Word into us as we have been walking through 1 Timothy. This week we will examine 1 Timothy 6:1-10. God begins 1 Timothy 6:1 with an admonition to slaves/bondservants/bond-slaves (employees, anyone under someone else’s authority) to make sure that they treat their master (boss, employer, the person in authority...

Day 2

As God uses Paul to speak to Timothy (and to all of us today), we read more about how we are to submit to the authorities God has placed in our lives. God actually has Paul specifically tell Timothy (and us) in 1 Timothy 6:2 that anyone who has a master (boss, supervisor, authority) who is a believer must make sure they do not treat that mast...

Day 3

God has used Paul to write His Word to Timothy (and us) as we read today in 1 Timothy 6:3-5 the warning about those who teach something contrary to the words of our Lord Jesus Christ. There were many false teachers in the day of Paul and Timothy and many false teachers still exist today. God wants us to make sure we know Him and His Word well...

Day 4

Our love for God and His Word is evident in the way we pursue our fellowship with God each day and the way we pursue His Word each day as well. Through Paul, God tells Timothy today (and us) that great gain comes from godliness and from being completely content in our Lord. Godliness is a choice we must make to live according to God’s Word. G...

Day 5

God wants us to experience His contentment in this world, but not to get caught up in living for this world. As we saw in yesterday’s devotion, God clarifies that living a godly life and being content in Him is where real gain comes from. Today, as we read 1 Timothy 6:7-8, God reminds us that we came into this world with absolutely nothing. W...

Day 7

God brings the hammer down in 1 Timothy 6:10 as we close out this week’s devotions. In yesterday’s devotion, we saw that seeking the riches of this world is never going to satisfy us. Today, God clarifies even further by telling us that it is “the love of money” that is the “root of all sorts of evil.” Note, God does not say that “money” is t...
