Scripture to Read: Luke 2:29-32
Simeon’s declaration is absolutely tremendous, as he declares who he is and who Jesus is as the Lord and King of all. Simeon first announces that he is a bond-servant of God in verse 29. The term “bond-servant” in the New Testament is a translation of the Greek word “doulos.” In the time of the New Testament, a bond-servant referred to someone who willingly served another. Just as a bond-servant, in human terms, was more than an employee who could leave for another job, followers of God before Christ, and then Christians (followers of Christ) were servants who could never leave their Master for another. Simeon was a follower of the Most High God and was not ashamed to proclaim this truth. Then Simeon declares in verses 30-32 all he has seen by seeing the baby Jesus. First, Simeon says that Jesus is God the Father’s salvation, and that is who Jesus is, our Savior who sets us free from our sin. Second, Simeon announces that God has sent Jesus to be in the presence of all peoples. Jesus did not come just for the nation of Israel, but He came to save all people from their sin (Titus 2:14). Third, as Simeon is declaring that Jesus came to save ALL people, Simeon also calls Jesus a Light of revelation. Jesus is the Light of the world, and as people surrender to Him, His Light dispels the darkness in each life, so every believer shines brightly for Him (1 John 2:8-11).
