Scripture to Read: Luke 2:24
We continue in Luke 2:24 because, in many religions, it’s taught that Mary was sinless because she gave birth to our Lord Jesus Christ. Many people also think the wise men came to the manger to see Jesus (Matthew 2:11), but Luke 2:24 confirms that they did not. What we find is that Mary’s offering of two birds proves that Mary and Joseph were poor. The law required the offering of a lamb for a burnt offering (Leviticus 1:6-7). If Mary and Joseph had the money, which they would have had if the wise men had come to the manger, they would have brought a lamb. But, Leviticus 12:8 tells us, “if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, the one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering.” Mary and Joseph brought two birds as an offering, as recorded in Luke 2:24. Mary also offered a sin offering for herself, confirming that Mary was a sinner, just like us, in need of a Savior. Joseph and Mary’s obedience to God’s law shines brightly and is an excellent reminder that they sought to be in right fellowship with God. The beauty of all of this is that even though Joseph and Mary could not afford a lamb, they were bringing THE Lamb of God to the Temple, who would be THE Sacrifice for all mankind’s sins. Christ’s sacrifice would eliminate the need for any more sacrifices.
