Scripture to Read: Luke 2:25-26
Sadly, almost every modern translation of the Bible leaves out one important word, in verse 25, that is present in all the Greek texts. The word “BEHOLD!” Charles Spurgeon reminds us that, “Behold is a word of wonder; it is intended to excite admiration. Wherever you see it hung out in Scripture, it is like an ancient sign-board, signifying that there are rich wares within, or like the hands which solid readers have observed in the margin of the older Puritanic books, drawing attention to something particularly worthy of observation.” We know, from verse 25, that Simeon was “righteous” and “devout.” The word “righteous,” or as some translations say, “just” defines Simeon’s character before men. The word “devout” defines Simeon’s character before God. We know Simeon was in right fellowship with God because the Holy Spirit was upon him. So, Simeon was a man who was in right relationship with man and God. Because Simeon walked in right fellowship with God, he longed and looked for the coming Messiah. God, through His Holy Spirit, had told Simeon he would not die before he had seen the Messiah. What an incredible promise, but also what an incredible privilege to see the Savior before he died. God desires for us NOT to miss His precious and magnificent promises (2 Peter 1:3-4) that He has for us, as His children. If we’re not careful, we miss them because we either fail to talk with God or become to busy to listen to Him!
Challenge & Application
When you think about being “righteous” and “devout” how are you seeking to be in right fellowship with others and with God? What are you doing to guard yourself from missing the promises God has for you?
