Scripture to Read: John 5:33-47
The Jewish leaders had gone to confront Jesus for healing someone on the Sabbath. At this point, our Lord lets them know that His testimony is greater than John the Baptist’s testimony. Many believed John the Baptist as he testified of the coming Messiah. Jesus wants those who are listening to understand that He is the Messiah whom John the Baptist had been testifying. Jesus also proclaims, to the Jewish leaders, that God the Father has testified about Him. Then Jesus tells them that they have never heard God the Father, nor do they have His Word in them, because they never believed God. Jesus rebukes them, not wanting there to be any mistake in who He was or is. Christ is greater than all because He is the King, the Lord, the One and Only Creator. We have the privilege of proclaiming Christ’s testimony because of what He’s done, is doing and continues to do in each of us, as believers in Him. We have an excellent testimony because He lives in us. Our testimony should not focus on our past. Our testimony instead should focus on the power of Christ in us now, changing us daily. God reminds us in 1 Peter 2:9, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” Let’s make sure we are proclaiming the excellencies of Him.
