Scripture to Read: Romans 7:13
We have discussed this week how God’s Word does not cause us to sin but points out how sinful we are. Today, God brings to the forefront this very Truth in Romans 7:13, Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful. God has Paul ask if God’s Word was the cause of his death. God has Paul answer with a resounding, “May it never be!” Sin has always been the cause of death. When Adam and Eve sinned, their sin brought death to themselves and the entire human race. Sin not only brings death, but there are other consequences from sin. We might think, “What other consequences could there be since death is the worst consequence of all?” As followers of Christ, our fellowship with God is broken when we sin. By sinning, we have chosen to turn away from walking in obedience to God and instead walk according to our fleshly desires. We cannot fellowship with God when we have turned our back to Him. When we sin, we must repent (turn around) and confess our sin to God and thank Him for the fullness of His forgiveness (1 John 1:9). We can walk in victory, but only by choosing to stay in right fellowship with our Lord and His Word and rejecting the temptations of this world (1 Corinthians 10:13).
