Day 6

Scripture to Read: Romans 7:13

We have discussed this week how God’s Word does not cause us to sin but points out how sinful we are. Today, God brings to the forefront this very Truth in Romans 7:13, Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful. God has Paul ask if God’s Word was the cause of his death. God has Paul answer with a resounding, “May it never be!” Sin has always been the cause of death. When Adam and Eve sinned, their sin brought death to themselves and the entire human race. Sin not only brings death, but there are other consequences from sin. We might think, “What other consequences could there be since death is the worst consequence of all?” As followers of Christ, our fellowship with God is broken when we sin. By sinning, we have chosen to turn away from walking in obedience to God and instead walk according to our fleshly desires. We cannot fellowship with God when we have turned our back to Him. When we sin, we must repent (turn around) and confess our sin to God and thank Him for the fullness of His forgiveness (1 John 1:9). We can walk in victory, but only by choosing to stay in right fellowship with our Lord and His Word and rejecting the temptations of this world (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Challenge & Application

What does it take to walk in right fellowship with our Lord each day? How are you choosing to walk in right fellowship with Christ, and how are you helping others do the same?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

When we finished our devotions on Romans 7:1–6, we learned how God made it clear, in Romans 7:6, that we’ve been set free from the bondage we had been placed in through His Law. Again, God’s Law did not cause our bondage; we became aware of our bondage to sin through God’s Law. But God had to make sure no one thought that His Law was what cau...

Day 2

As we continue to walk through Romans 7, we see God pointing out how our sinful nature is awakened by His perfect Law. God had Paul write in Romans 7:8, But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead. Now, it sounds like God’s Law actually produces in us our sinfu...

Day 3

As we read Romans 7, God continues to use Paul to address our sinful nature and how His Law shows everyone how wicked we are apart from Christ. Today, we read in Romans 7:9, I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died. As we read Romans 7:9, it actually sounds like Paul had “life” apart from...

Day 4

God has been helping us this week to see how His Word is perfect and how He uses His Word to point out the sinfulness in every human being. Today we read in Romans 7:10–11, and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me; 11 for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it ...

Day 5

We have been discovering this week that God’s Word is perfect and that His Word reveals to us our sinfulness but does not cause our sinfulness. Today, God confirms that His Word is perfect. We read in Romans 7:12, So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. God’s Word is holy, which means His Word is perfect ...

Day 7

Our weeks seem to go by so fast, and this week is no different. Even in the fast-paced world in which we live, it is awesome to know how God is working and revealing to us how to walk in right fellowship with Him daily. Today, we finish with Romans 7:14, which says, For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage t...
