Scripture to Read: Romans 7:10-11
God has been helping us this week to see how His Word is perfect and how He uses His Word to point out the sinfulness in every human being. Today we read in Romans 7:10–11, and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me; 11 for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. When God’s Word speaks to those who do not have a relationship with Christ, His Word shows them that they are already dead in their sin. God says it this way in Ephesians 2:1–3, And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. It’s not that people have “life” apart from Christ; it’s that people are already dead in their sin apart from Christ. God’s Word reveals the death lost people are in and that “life” is only possible through Christ. Christ alone gives “life,” which is what God’s Word tells us in John 11:25 and Colossians 3:4. As Christians, we have “life” because we have Christ. Those without Christ need to hear this Good News from us.
