Day 2

Scripture to Read: Romans 15:2–3

God had Paul continue to edify all believers by challenging us to examine our hearts toward others. God had Paul write in Romans 15:2, “Each of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to his edification.” This one scripture verse alone flies in the face of our modern-day culture. We know we are all born into sin and have a selfish nature, especially without Christ. Even with Christ in us, we still have to crucify our selfish thoughts, feelings, and motives daily. A simple test to prove we are bent toward thinking of ourselves first can be done by asking ourselves, “When I’m in a group photo, who is the first person I look at in that photo?” Almost everyone we know would say, I look at myself to make sure I look good.” It’s not until we see ourselves that we’ll make our final assessment of whether we like the picture. God also tells us how ugly selfishness is in James 3:14–16, “But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.” God says that when we are selfish, we’ve bought the lie of worldly wisdom and that it is not from Him. So, to live according to Romans 15:2, we must crucify our selfish desires to please our Lord, for pleasing Him is what matters most.

Challenge & Application

· We know we are inherently selfish, but we must die to our selfishness and serve, so how are you currently doing that? · How are you guarding against being selfish since we know it is a battle we all face daily?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

When we ended last week in Romans 14, God was making sure we understood that it was better not to do something so that a weaker believer would not be caused to stumble. So, we must always consider those around us to ensure we are not a stumbling block to them. With that in mind, God continued to use Paul, as he wrote Romans 15:1, to help all ...

Day 3

Yesterday, God challenged us to please our neighbors for their good and to be sure and edify them. Today, as we continue through Romans 15:1–7, God tells us why we are to please our neighbor. God had Paul write in Romans 15:3, For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me....

Day 4

God has been teaching us about bearing the weaknesses of those who are not as strong in their walk with Him and that we must please others and encourage them above ourselves. We also know that we do these things because it is precisely what our Lord Jesus Christ did for us. God then reminds us (in Romans 15:4) that everything He’s laid out th...

Day 5

As God led Paul to write the book of Romans, God had Paul pray for the believers in Rome, but this is also a prayer for us because God’s Word is everlasting. God led Paul to pray, in Romans 15:5–6, “Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, 6 so that w...

Day 6

We ended yesterday’s devotion focusing on our Lord’s desire for us to be unified as His children. This is so critically important because when believers live in unity, we are not distracted by selfishness, nor do we lose sight of what God has already told us to do. When we are unified, we love our neighbor as we’re commanded (Matthew 22:39), ...

Day 7

God continues to challenge us in our relationships with each other. As we saw in the last two devotions, God had Paul pray for all believers to be unified and we know how important that is to God. Then God led Paul to write, in Romans 15:7, “Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God.” When we accept ea...
