Scripture to Read: Psalm 142:7
As David’s prayer to our Lord comes to a close, we read in Psalm 142:7, “Bring my soul out of prison, so that I may give thanks to Your name; The righteous will surround me, for You will deal bountifully with me.” David felt imprisoned because of Saul seeking to kill him. David felt like his freedom had been robbed from him, and for that time in his life, that was true. David was on the run, hiding from Saul and his men so David could live to see another day. David knew God’s call upon his life because David had been anointed by Samuel the prophet in 1 Samuel 16. David, though, did not know how God would deliver him or when. David looked forward to the day that he would be able to thank God for delivering him and surrounding him with the righteous. David also knew God would eventually deal bountifully with him. We have such an advantage over David because God has already dealt bountifully with us through Christ our Lord. God has already given us everything we need for life and godliness, and life and godliness come through us passionately pursuing our intimacy with Christ and His Word daily (2 Peter 1:3–4). Though our Lord mightily came upon David the day he was anointed (1 Samuel 16:13), God’s Spirit did not permanently start living in His children until Acts 2. We can confidently thank our Lord that He has delivered us from the prison of sin and sealed us for the day He calls us home.
