Scripture to Read: Psalm 130:6
God had the psalmist use the watchmen as an example of those who long for something expectantly. We read in Psalm 130:6, “My soul waits for the Lord more than the watchmen for the morning; Indeed, more than the watchmen for the morning.” Some believe the watchmen were the military guards waiting for the first light of day. The night watchmen knew their enemies could not hide once the dawn broke forth. Other writers believe that the watchmen were the priests and Levites waiting for the dawn of the new morning so that they could begin to offer sacrifices to the Lord. The problem with thinking it’s the priests and Levites is that everyone would have to assume no sacrifices were ever offered after dark. But here is what God wants us to see: whoever the watchmen were, they waited for the morning light with the great expectation that it would come. So, as God allowed the psalmist to write, he longed for the Lord with great anticipation. We must long for God and His Word each day. That longing does not just happen, but we grow in that longing as we mature in our fellowship with God and His Word. God even tells us in 1 Peter 2:2–3, “like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, 3 if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.” God gives us another perfect illustration through a hungry baby of how we must long for Him and His Word.
