Scripture to Read: Psalm 130:3
When we consider our lives and what Christ has done for us, it is sometimes overwhelming to try to understand the vastness of His forgiveness, grace, mercy, and love. The question that God led the psalmist to write in Psalm 130:3 is incredibly humbling. We read, “If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” What God is getting us to do is imagine how horrible it would be if He kept a record of our sins. There are some people who live today thinking that they have two lists that they will present before God on judgment day. One list contains every sin they’ve ever committed, the other list is comprised of their good works. They believe that each good work wipes out one of their sins and that God will allow them to enter heaven as long as their good works list is longer than their sin list. Of course, that is not how it works. Just one sin separates us from God, and one sin makes us guilty of every sin (James 2:10, “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.”) So, as God allowed the psalmist to write, we come to the clear understanding that if God did keep a record of everyone’s sins, then no one would be able to stand before Him and claim any innocence whatsoever! Only through a blood sacrifice can anyone’s sins be cleansed, and that blood sacrifice is only offered through Christ alone (Acts 13:32–39, Hebrews 9:22).
