Scripture to Read: Matthew 6:33–34
Jesus finishes His teaching on worry by saying in Matthew 6:33–34, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” To seek God’s kingdom and righteousness means to seek our deep fellowship with Him. Remember when we discussed Philippians 4:6 and how God said we must pray to overcome anxiousness? Well, God also promised this in Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” When we’re seeking deep fellowship with our Lord and His word, seeking His kingdom and righteousness, that is when we’re going to experience the fullness of God’s perfect peace. God knows our hearts and how our hearts can get sidetracked by all this world throws at us. But when we seek Him and deepen our fellowship with Him, our worries melt away as we see how awesome He is and how small our so-called worries are. Jesus even ends by reminding us that each day has enough trouble without us adding to our list of things in the future that we have no control over. We know we face spiritual battles each day (Ephesians 6:10–18) and we know we’ll face tests and trials (James 1:2–4), so why would we want to add anything else to distract us from what God is doing? Trust Him completely and learn to rest in Him.
