Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:33–37
God has spoken to us the entire week about being honest and truthful, people of our word, and people others can count on and trust. God has reminded us that the body we live in is His and that we must glorify Him in all we do, say, and think. God says it like this in 1 Corinthians 6:19–20, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” So, we must glorify our King in His temple, our body. God also says this about telling the truth in Ephesians 4:25, “Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.” And again, God said this in Colossians 3:9, “Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices.” So, when Jesus spoke of our “yes” being “yes” and our “no” being “no,” there’s no question that our words should always be able to be trusted. When we are not truthful when we make promises and break them, we enter into the enemy's camp, for Satan is the father of lies. Jesus said this about Satan in John 8:44, “…Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” Our words are important; let’s not use them unwisely.
