Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:37
Jesus did qualify what we should do when we make a commitment to anyone. Jesus said in Matthew 5:37, “But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes ’or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil.” God also led James, Jesus’ half-brother, to write in James 5:12, “But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.” God wants us to be people of our word. Whether we answer “yes” or “no” to a question, everyone should be able to trust that we have answered truthfully. Jesus said, “anything beyond these is of evil.” Jesus wants us to know that we should never need to take an oath. What proceeds out of our mouths should ALWAYS be the truth. Our promises should never need any kind of guarantee. But here is the problem—we live in a sin-filled world. The fact that oaths are still necessary is proof that mankind is inherently sinful (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23). Our world is not good, for there is no goodness in any human being apart from Christ (Psalm 14:3, Psalm 53:3, Romans 3:10, Romans 3:12). We must live above reproach in this broken world so others can see the difference that Christ has made in us. As we follow through on our commitments and do our work for our Lord and not for men, as we honor Him, He is glorified and lives are changed.
