Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:33
We’re examining what it means to “fulfill our vows” to our Lord in everything we say. As we saw yesterday in Leviticus and Numbers, God says that we disrespect Him and His name and that we violate His Word when we do not keep our word. God said this about keeping our word in Deuteronomy 23:21–23, “When you make a vow to the Lord your God, you shall not delay to pay it, for it would be sin in you, and the Lord your God will surely require it of you. 22 However, if you refrain from vowing, it would not be sin in you. 23 You shall be careful to perform what goes out from your lips, just as you have voluntarily vowed to the Lord your God, what you have promised.” When God says, “you shall not delay to pay it,” it is obvious God is referring to owing a financial obligation to someone. But then God says, “You shall be careful to perform what goes out from your lips.” So, again, God never wants us to make empty promises of any kind. As believers, we must honor our Lord by following through on everything we say. We need to be known as people that others can count on and that what we say is what we’ll do. Excuses are usually a feeble way to cover a broken commitment. God wants us to speak the truth and to follow through on that truth so that we both honor Him and encourage those to whom we have made the promise.
Challenge & Application
· When you commit to others, how do you ensure that you keep that commitment?
· What do you do when you’re tempted to make an excuse and break your commitment?
