Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:33
Our focus this week is on Matthew 5:33–37. Our Lord Jesus Christ challenges us to make sure we always speak the truth. Jesus starts by saying in Matthew 5:33, “Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord.’” When Jesus says, “you have heard that the ancients were told,” He is letting the people know that what He is about to say comes straight out of God’s Law in either Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, or possibly a combination of two, three, or all four books. God said it this way in Leviticus 19:12, “You shall not swear falsely by My name, so as to profane the name of your God; I am the Lord.” Then, God said it like this in Numbers 30:2, “If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or takes an oath to bind himself with a binding obligation, he shall not violate his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.” In the Old Testament, when the Israelites would make a promise to someone, they would seal the promise by using the Name of the Lord as the seal of their promise. God never wanted, and still to this day does not want, His name to be attached to any lie or deceptive deal. God is Truth, and Satan is the father of lies. So, God never wanted any of His children to break a promise, for broken promises are the same as lies, and lies dishonor our Lord.
Challenge & Application
· What happens when we break a promise with someone or if someone breaks a promise with us?
· Why is it so important for us to be people that do everything that comes out of our mouths?
