Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:29–30
Since overcoming our fleshly desires is what Jesus desires for us, we need to understand what we’re up against. God’s Word tells us in Galatians 5:19–25, “Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.” As we examine all of the deeds of our flesh, I love how God led Paul to add “and things like these” so that every fleshly action and desire is included. These are the fleshly desires we must crucify continually so that we bear God’s fruit through our lives. The evidence of a Spirit-filled life is when we live out the nine attributes of “the fruit of the Spirit.” These nine characteristics are what God has given us so that we bring Him honor and glory in the way we treat everyone around us. Since we belong to Christ, we must crucify our flesh and live by God’s Spirit in us. We have everything we need through Him; we just need to submit to Him.
