Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:27
Jesus is our King, Lord, Master, and Friend. He came to pay the price for all mankind’s sins and to set us all free from sin's bondage. Our Lord Jesus Christ does not want us to be a slave to anything except Him and His righteousness. God said it like this in Romans 6:16-18, “Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.” So, as Jesus continued to teach in Matthew 5, we read in Matthew 5:27, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’” Jesus quotes Exodus 20:14 and Deuteronomy 5:18, the Seventh Commandment of the Ten Commandments God gave Moses. God even said this about adultery in Leviticus 20:10, “If there is a man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, one who commits adultery with his friend’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.” God has never dealt lightly with any sin because sin always results in death (Romans 5:12, 6:23, James 1:15). God the Father dealt so harshly with sin that He sacrificed His Only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to set us free from sin.
