Day 2

Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:17

Our Lord Jesus Christ came into this world in God the Father’s perfect time and way! God tells us in Galatians 4:4–5, “But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His son, born of a woman, born under the Law, 5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.” Jesus was “born under the Law” which means Christ had to fulfill God the Father’s perfect Law and live a perfect, spotless, sinless life to be able to be the perfect sacrificial Lamb to pay the penalty for the entire human race’s sins. So, when Jesus said in Matthew 5:17, “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill,” we have a better understanding of what Christ was saying. Many of the twelve disciples and many of the people on the mountainside listening to Christ that day had been hoping for a powerful earthly king to come and rule and reign on earth. But Jesus did not come to be an earthly king; He came to overcome sin, death, and the grave and satisfy the wrath of God through His perfect, sinless life. As a human race, we have always thought we could work our way to God and if we did more good than bad, God would accept us into His kingdom. But God requires perfection, and only those who are perfect, sinless, and without blemish can be a child of our Perfect God. Only through Christ is this possible.

Challenge & Application

· Why did Christ come to fulfill God’s perfect Law and all that the Prophets had foretold about the Messiah? · Without Christ fulfilling God’s Law, what would be the outcome for the entire human race, and why?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

There are people today who say the Old Testament is irrelevant or no longer needed. The major problem with that type of thinking is that it undermines the entire gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. If there is no study of God’s Law in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, then we’ll never understand why Christ had to sacrifice His life fo...

Day 3

Jesus says in Matthew 5:18, “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” Remember, Jesus had just said that He came to fulfill God’s Law, and now He’s testifying that all of God’s Law will come to pass and be fulfilled. There have always been d...

Day 4

Jesus did not want there to be any question about the authority of His Word. Some have thought that Jesus might be saying in Matthew 5:18 that when heaven and earth pass away, God’s Word will also pass away. But that is not what Jesus was saying. Jesus was assuring the people that God’s Word will stand forever. We see Jesus say something simi...

Day 5

Jesus, as He continued to talk about God’s Holy Command, said this in the first half of Matthew 5:19, “Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven.” To “annul” God’s Word means to break, invalidate, ignore, reduce, or make it insignificant. To co...

Day 6

Jesus continued in Matthew 5:19, saying of God’s Commands, “but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Walking in God’s commands is the path that always leads to life. Walking in obedience to God’s Truth is not always the easiest path, and sometimes it will be the hardest to walk, but it is the mos...

Day 7

Jesus desires us to be “doers” of His Word as we examined Matthew 5:19. In Matthew 5:20, Jesus went on to say, “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus told his disciples and us that being a “doer” has to go deeper than just the outward appea...
