Day 2

Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:3

Jesus began teaching and said this in Matthew 5:3: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Since Jesus uses the word “blessed” several times in Matthew 5:2–11, we need to understand what the word “blessed” means. When the word “blessed” is used in reference to God, it can mean to “praise” God. Some examples in Scripture would include Exodus 18:10, 1 Kings 1:48, Psalm 41:13, Psalm 72:18, Psalm 106:48, and Luke 1:68. But when “blessed” is used in reference to mankind, it usually means that God is showing mankind His “favor." Some great examples of “blessed” being used as God’s favor on mankind can be found in Psalm 1:1, James 1:25, and of course, here in Matthew 5:3–11. In the Amplified Bible, to be “poor in spirit” means “those devoid of spiritual arrogance, those who regard themselves as insignificant.” But the NLT says that the “poor in spirit” are “those who are poor and realize their need for Him.” As Jesus began to teach the people, He first dealt with the condition of the soul and that everyone must fully realize our need for a relationship with God before we can enter the kingdom of God. Apart from Christ, everyone’s spirit is dead (Ephesians 2:1). Therefore, every lost soul who realizes “I am not enough” and their great need for a relationship with Christ as their Lord receives God’s abundant favor. Only through Christ does the kingdom of heaven become our home, and we become part of God’s Holy family.

Challenge & Application

· When did you become “poor in spirit” and surrender to Christ as Lord and who will you share that with this week? · Besides being saved from your sin and being a child of God, how else have you experienced God’s favor?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

God loves to bless those who walk in obedience to Him and His Word; that is why Jesus also shared in Matthew 5:7–8, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” As Christ describes, showing mercy to others is only possible to those who have received the rich mercy of our L...

Day 6

Our Lord is our Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), and since we surrendered to Him as Lord, He expects us to be “peacemakers.” Jesus said, in Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” What a privilege to be called children of God and because we are His children, He wants us to be an imitator of Him (Ephesian...
