Day 1

Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:1–2

Over the next three months, we have the privilege to walk through the Sermon on the Mount recorded in Matthew 5, 6, & 7. As we start in Matthew 5:1–2, we need a little context. Jesus had called His disciples to follow Him. According to Matthew 4:23–25, “Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people. 24 The news about Him spread throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, paralytics; and He healed them. 25 Large crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan.” So, Jesus was teaching and healing and because of the healings, people started bringing many other people to Him who needed to be healed. We know Jesus did not come to heal everyone physically, for if He had, then He failed miserably. But Jesus came to heal every person's soul (our minds, wills, and emotions). That is why we read in Matthew 5:1–2 that when the crowds kept coming, He went up on a mountain, sat down, and began teaching everyone there. Jesus knew the crowds came for healing, but He began to share with them His Word, for He knew His Word could set them free. In ministry today, we use different events to bring in crowds but it’s never just to draw a crowd; its purpose is to feed them the “bread of Life.”

Challenge & Application

· We know Christ came to heal our souls; so, how have you experienced Christ’s work in your life today? · How is God using you to share His Truth with others, knowing His Truth transforms lives?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 2

Jesus began teaching and said this in Matthew 5:3: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Since Jesus uses the word “blessed” several times in Matthew 5:2–11, we need to understand what the word “blessed” means. When the word “blessed” is used in reference to God, it can mean to “praise” God. Some examples in S...

Jesus also said, in Matthew 5:4–5, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.” We can mourn many things: the death of a friend or a loved one, the loss of a job, the loss of a close friendship due to someone moving, the loss of a pet, and so many other things. But wi...

Day 4

There are many things in this world that we think will bring us satisfaction. If we ask most people, “What brings you the most satisfaction?” everyone would have their interpretation of what they believe is most satisfying to them. But Jesus is our final authority and in Matthew 5:6, He said,“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righte...

Day 5

God loves to bless those who walk in obedience to Him and His Word; that is why Jesus also shared in Matthew 5:7–8, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” As Christ describes, showing mercy to others is only possible to those who have received the rich mercy of our L...

Day 6

Our Lord is our Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), and since we surrendered to Him as Lord, He expects us to be “peacemakers.” Jesus said, in Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” What a privilege to be called children of God and because we are His children, He wants us to be an imitator of Him (Ephesian...

Day 7

We end this week's devotions examining what Jesus said in Matthew 5:10–12, “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your re...
