Scripture to Read: Matthew 11:29
When we consider that Christ called us to take His yoke upon ourselves, as we saw in yesterday’s devotion, that means we must serve. Jesus Said in John 13:13–15, “You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.” We don’t see anyone washing anyone else’s feet today, but in the days of Christ this was normal in many households. Many homes had servants and the least of all the servants was the foot washer. This servant was to wash the feet of guests who visited the home where they served. The place where Jesus and His disciples met for the Last Supper was a borrowed room, so there was no servant to wash their feet. Jesus, as an example to His disciples and to us, washed the disciple's feet to show us all that no act of service is beneath us. God’s Word tells us in Philippians 2:5–7, “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.” Jesus emptied Himself, became a bond-servant, and loved and served the ones He created. We must follow His example and serve well.
