Scripture to Read: Matthew 11:29
Our Lord Jesus often used illustrations in His teaching so that everyone would understand. The term “yoke” is not common today. The word "yoke" is used in several different ways in the Bible, but most of the time it referred to a wooden frame that was put over the necks of two animals so that they could pull together a plow or cart. So, when the term “yoke” was used, it usually represented teamwork. Jesus used the image of a yoke to describe His relationship between Himself and His followers. So, when Jesus said in Matthew 11:29, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Jesus used the word “yoke” to represent the commitment of discipleship (learning from Christ and His Word). But Jesus also wanted everyone to understand that it was a yoke of love and service. Jesus came to serve and not be served, so He expects His followers to follow His example and serve those who come across our paths. Jesus commanded us to love one another, for He loves us with His everlasting love. As we love Him and others and serve as He served, Jesus promises all of His followers that as we submit to His authority, we find true peace and joy in our souls. Our soul is made up of our mind, will, and emotions. When we’re in right fellowship with our Lord, our mind is not distracted, our will is in line with His, and our emotions are at perfect rest.
