Day 5

Scripture to Read: Luke 6:12

Jesus, just like us, needed rest and refreshment at times. God had Luke record this in Luke 6:12, “It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.” Jesus needed to be refreshed and renewed through His fellowship with God the Father. Though Jesus is God, when He walked here on earth He was also 100% man. He ate when He was hungry, slept when He was tired, laughed when something was funny, and wept when people were hurting. So, Jesus also needed daily time alone with God the Father to pray, to lay out His supplications, to share His thanksgivings, and to request from the Father the things He saw He needed to ask for. Jesus never took His fellowship with the Father lightly and He never made excuses for missing it, because He never compromised in any area of His life. This is why our daily time alone with God the Father through Christ our Lord, because His Holy Spirit lives in us, is so critical and crucial to our daily spiritual health. When we do not set a specific time aside daily to be refreshed, renewed, revived, and restored through fellowship with our Heavenly Father and deep intimate time in His Word, then we are setting ourselves up for failure, being overcome by our weaknesses, falling for the lies of the god of this world and the false teachers being used by him. Since Jesus gave us His example, we need to follow it daily.

Challenge & Application

Why did Jesus get alone with God the Father and talk to Him? How important is it that we follow Jesus’ example, and how can we be an example to other believers?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus’ ministry often took place on the Sabbath. We read in Luke 6:1–5, “Now it happened that He was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, ‘Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?’ 3 And Jes...

Day 2

God shows us very clearly in Exodus 23:12 and Deuteronomy 5:14 that He gave the Sabbath to mankind so that they and their animals may get some rest and refresh themselves. God never designed the Sabbath to be a heavy burden on people, but that is exactly what the Sabbath had become to the Jewish people. It was a burden because the religious l...

Day 3

Jesus is God; therefore, He knew what the scribes and the Pharisees were thinking on that Sabbath day. God had Luke record this for us in Luke 6:8–9, “But He knew what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, ‘Get up and come forward!’ And he got up and came forward. 9 And Jesus said to them, ‘I ask you, is it lawful...

Day 4

Jesus knew what He was about to do, but before the miracle, He looked around to see if anyone was willing to answer His question. Everyone kept silent, and so God had Luke record this in Luke 6:10–11, “After looking around at them all, He said to him, ‘Stretch out your hand!’ And he did so; and his hand was restored. 11 But they themselves we...

Day 6

Jesus had spent the entire night in prayer. Then, God had Luke tell us this in Luke 6:13–16, “And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew; 15 and Matthew and Thomas; James t...

Day 7

Jesus chose the twelve young men He would spend the most time with and disciple, but there were many other disciples who wanted to follow Him as well. God had Luke record in Luke 6:17–19, “Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was a large crowd of His disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusal...
