Day 2

Scripture to Read: Luke 6:6–7

God shows us very clearly in Exodus 23:12 and Deuteronomy 5:14 that He gave the Sabbath to mankind so that they and their animals may get some rest and refresh themselves. God never designed the Sabbath to be a heavy burden on people, but that is exactly what the Sabbath had become to the Jewish people. It was a burden because the religious leaders simply made people follow the rules they had added to God’s Law. That is why God had Luke record this in Luke 6:6–7, “On another Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. 7 The scribes and the Pharisees were watching Him closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him.” The scribes and the Pharisees did nothing more than keep a close eye on Jesus, hoping to catch Him doing something against God’s Law on a Sabbath day. Since we know why God gave the Sabbath, we can see how ridiculous the actions of the scribes and the Pharisees were. God even tells us in Colossians 2:16–17, “Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day— 17 things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.” This means that Christ is who was foreshadowed, that He is our reality. The scribes and the Pharisees missed reality and settled for the mere shadow.

Challenge & Application

Why did the scribes and the Pharisees miss reality and settle for the mere shadow? (See Ephesians 2:1–3 for help.) How do we guard against settling for the mere shadow of what’s to come and live fully, knowing that Christ is our reality and hope?

Day 1

Jesus’ ministry often took place on the Sabbath. We read in Luke 6:1–5, “Now it happened that He was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, ‘Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?’ 3 And Jes...

Day 3

Jesus is God; therefore, He knew what the scribes and the Pharisees were thinking on that Sabbath day. God had Luke record this for us in Luke 6:8–9, “But He knew what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, ‘Get up and come forward!’ And he got up and came forward. 9 And Jesus said to them, ‘I ask you, is it lawful...

Day 4

Jesus knew what He was about to do, but before the miracle, He looked around to see if anyone was willing to answer His question. Everyone kept silent, and so God had Luke record this in Luke 6:10–11, “After looking around at them all, He said to him, ‘Stretch out your hand!’ And he did so; and his hand was restored. 11 But they themselves we...

Day 5

Jesus, just like us, needed rest and refreshment at times. God had Luke record this in Luke 6:12, “It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.” Jesus needed to be refreshed and renewed through His fellowship with God the Father. Though Jesus is God, when He walked here on earth ...

Day 6

Jesus had spent the entire night in prayer. Then, God had Luke tell us this in Luke 6:13–16, “And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew; 15 and Matthew and Thomas; James t...

Day 7

Jesus chose the twelve young men He would spend the most time with and disciple, but there were many other disciples who wanted to follow Him as well. God had Luke record in Luke 6:17–19, “Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was a large crowd of His disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusal...
