Day 5

Scripture to Read: Luke 5:8–9

When we recognize God’s handiwork in and through us as well as in others who belong to Him, it should always amaze us and leave us in complete awe of who He is as our God and King. This is what happened to Simon, Andrew, and the others who were fishing that day. God had Luke record in Luke 5:8–9, “But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, ‘Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!’ 9 For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken.” Simon, Andrew, and the others had just seen an incredible miracle and they were blown away. However, this was not the first miracle Simon had witnessed. We must remember that Jesus had miraculously healed Simon’s mother-in-law in Luke 4:38–39. This second miracle brought about a response from Simon that was not recorded after Simon saw his mother-in-law healed. It might have been because it was the second miracle Simon saw that brought him to a point of realizing that Jesus was worthy of his worship. Simon also saw his own sinfulness and knew that he was not worthy to be in the presence of Jesus. When anyone sees Jesus for the first time for who He is (Lord, King, God, Master, Creator, and Savior), the only proper response is to worship Him and also realize how sinful they are. Thankfully, when anyone repents of their sin and turns to follow Christ, He receives them with loving open arms.

Challenge & Application

Why should God’s handiwork always amaze us and deepen our awe of Him as our God, King, and Lord? When people finally have their eyes open to Jesus being the Messiah, why do they also see their sinfulness?

Day 1

When we left off in Luke 4, Jesus continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea. As we begin Luke 5, God had Luke record in Luke 5:1, “Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret.” Jesus was drawing a crowd wherever He went. Jesus shared the Word of ...

Day 2

Jesus was not by the lake of Gennesaret by accident. Jesus knew who God the Father had chosen for Him to call as His first disciples. God had Luke record in Luke 5:2–3, “and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 3 And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’...

Day 3

Jesus’s plan continues to unfold as God had Luke record in Luke 5:4–5, “When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.’ 5 Simon answered and said, ‘Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.’” God did not have Luke reco...

Day 4

Since Simon was willing to obey the words of Jesus, he was abundantly blessed. God tells us in James 1:22–25, “But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at h...

Day 6

God had Luke then record who Simon’s companions were that day, as God had Luke record in Luke 5:10, “and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.’” Though Andrew is not mentioned in Luke 5:1–11, we know Andrew was there because God ...

Day 7

When anyone finally realizes that Jesus is God, that He came to earth to die for mankind by sacrificing His own life as the Perfect sacrifice for sins, and also taking on Himself the full wrath/judgment of God to pay the full price for the sins of all mankind, that is when they are ready and willing to follow Him as Lord and Savior. Simon, An...
