Scripture to Read: Luke 5:6–7
Since Simon was willing to obey the words of Jesus, he was abundantly blessed. God tells us in James 1:22–25, “But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.” God expects all of His followers to obey His Word and not just settle for listening to it and then never being transformed by it. God promises to bless those who are “effectual doers” of His Word. Simon and his brother Andrew were blessed beyond measure as God had Luke record in Luke 5:6–7, “When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; 7 so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink.” Jesus never wants us to settle for just knowing about Him, but He desires that we walk in obedience to Him as our Lord. When we do, He’ll do in and through us far beyond anything we can ask or think.
