Scripture to Read: Luke 5:4–5
Jesus’s plan continues to unfold as God had Luke record in Luke 5:4–5, “When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.’ 5 Simon answered and said, ‘Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.’” God did not have Luke record what Jesus had been teaching the people while sitting in Simon’s boat. But when Jesus was done, He asked Simon to go fishing one more time. Note that Simon first tells Jesus that they had just spent an entire night fishing with no results. But then, Simon called Jesus, Master. The Greek word God had Luke record for “Master” is the Greek word “Epistata.” This Greek word can be defined in English as “Commander,” “Leader,” or possibly even as “Boss.” When Simon called Jesus “Master,” he revealed to Jesus that he was willing to follow Jesus’ orders. Also note that Simon says, “I will do as You say.” Simon was declaring that he trusted Jesus’s words and that he would fulfill His request. We must remember that, as our Lord spoke in Genesis 1, everything He desired to create came into existence as He spoke. We must always trust in God’s Word and know that God has given it to us so that we know Him and willingly obey Him. As God’s Word tells us in Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
