Scripture to Read: Luke 20:9-18
Read through Luke 20:9-18 again. Today let’s consider all the ways God speaks to us and through us. Just as God used Moses, the prophets, the judges, the apostles, and many others to write and proclaim His Word, today God uses us, His children, to proclaim Him and His Word. God speaks to us daily as we read, study, and memorize His Word. God has also given us His Holy Spirit to live in us, and most assuredly, God speaks to us through His Spirit. We must guard our hearts against closing ourselves off to God and His Word. Can we, as Christians, actually close ourselves off to God? We definitely can, for God warns us, as His children, in Ephesians 4:30, “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” Then God warns us in 1 Thessalonians 5:19, “Do not quench the Spirit.” So, God has made it clear that we can actually “grieve” and “quench” God the Spirit within us. When we grieve or quench God the Spirit, we have chosen to shut ourselves off from listening to God and His Word. God’s Word becomes boring to us, and our prayer life becomes lifeless. We find ourselves hungering more for the things of this world and not for God and His Word. God desires us to listen to Him and to walk in His Truth. The key is that we must choose to pursue Him and His Word passionately, so we grow and mature each day.
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about how He speaks to you?
2. What will you do to guard yourself from grieving or quenching God the Spirit in you?
