Scripture to Read: Luke 17:14-16
As we learned from yesterday’s devotion, our Lord Jesus Christ is an incredibly compassionate God. And today, we read this in Luke 17:14–16, “When He saw them, He said to them, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they were going, they were cleansed. 15 Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice, 16 and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan.” Jesus told the ten lepers to “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” To understand why Jesus told them to do this, we must understand what God commanded in the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, the way leprosy was handled was for a priest to examine a person and determine whether they were “unclean” or “clean.” That was the way a person with leprosy could be restored to normal life in their community. We must also note that when Jesus told them to go and show themselves to the priests, they had not yet been healed. Surely, some of them probably questioned why He would ask them to do this while they knew they still had leprosy. Nonetheless, they were on their way to see the priest when the healing took place, but we see only one who stopped, turned around, and went back to Jesus. When we consider all that Christ has done for us, we must turn to Him daily, praising God for all He has done for us through Christ and worshiping Him with all we are.
