Scripture to Read: Luke 17:5-6
It’s interesting that as Jesus taught His disciples about temptation and then about forgiveness, their request of Jesus was to “increase” their faith. We read in Luke 17:5–6, “The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ 6 And the Lord said, ‘If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would obey you.’” The apostles knew that what Jesus had just taught them would require more than they could give, so, all they could think of was that their faith needed to be increased. But God tells us in Romans 12:3, “For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.” So, God says we have all the faith we need. That is exactly what Jesus told the apostles when He said that the size of their faith was not the issue, but rather, what they would do with the faith they had. Our Lord wants us to know that the faith we have is more than enough to follow and obey Him wholeheartedly. What our Lord does for us is place us in situations where our faith in Him is tested. Only through the tests and trials of this life can our faith be strengthened. That is why God tells us in James 1:3, “that the testing of your faith produces endurance.”
