Day 2

Scripture to Read: Luke 13:20-21

Today we focus on Luke 13:20-21. Like yesterday’s devotion, we see that commentators differ on what they think Jesus was communicating. Most commentators see the leaven as a beautiful picture of the kingdom of God working its way through the whole world. But other commentators say that since leaven is often used as a picture of sin and corruption in the Bible, like in the Passover in Exodus 12:8 and Exodus12:15-20, this parable is a description of the corruption that creeps into God’s church. Either way, both are true. Leaven works to expand the dough or batter that it is placed within. God’s Gospel may seem like leaven to a Jewish culture because many Jews in Jesus’ day, and still today, do not believe that Christ is the Messiah. So, when Christ came to this world to preach the Good News and fulfill almost all 400 plus prophecies about the Messiah in the OT, many Jews refused Him. But leaven could also represent those who have infiltrated the church to bring dissent, corruption, confusion and such because they seek to stop the church’s growth. Either way, both are happening and have been happening since Christ ascended into heaven. The church, the body of Christ that every believer is a part of, continues to thrive and grow and greatly influences this broken world. But we all have seen those who have brought discord within the body of believers too. We must be sure to be living so we help increase God’s Kingdom and not be a hindrance to what God is doing.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about His Kingdom growing and how the enemy is trying to stop that growth? 2. What actions will you take to be a part of growing God’s church?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

As we walk through God’s Word this week, we will unpack what God is teaching us. As we read Luke 13:18-29, some commentaries say that this parable is all about the corruption that infiltrates the church, then others say that Jesus is describing the growth and incredible influence of His church. As we read Luke 13:10-17, we see that Jesus had ...

Day 3

As we saw in the first two devotions this week, commentators on Luke 13:18-21 disagree on whether the parables represent the negative influence that will infiltrate the church or the growth of the church itself. Negative influence has been within the church since Christ’s church began. As we read Acts 4:36-37, we find Barnabas introduced. Thi...

Day 4

As we continue examining how the church is infiltrated with people with ill intentions, today we focus on 3 John. As God led John to write to Gaius, God used John to encourage Gaius and, of course, all other believers who were walking in God’s Truth. Gaius, and many other believers in their local church, helped and supported the missionaries ...

Day 5

God wants us to be aware that there are those who seek to lead people away from God’s Truth and believe the lies of this world. If Jesus, in Luke 13:18-21, was warning against those who would bring problems within the church, then we must heed the warning. Any time God is miraculously working, the spiritual forces of darkness are also working...

Day 6

God has designed us, in Christ, to do the works He has already prepared for us to do. As we think about the parable in Luke 13:18-21, if our Lord shared that parable so we would understand that His Kingdom was going to grow exponentially, then He did not want us to miss our part in that growth process. Ephesians 2:10 is a very familiar verse ...

Day 7

As we finish this week, we have seen how God has created us to help multiply His Kingdom for His glory. Today we find the godly principle that God will multiply His seed of righteousness through us as we serve Him. We must remember that if someone does not invest daily in their walk with our Lord, that person will not have much to reap in and...
