Day 7

Scripture to Read: Luke 13:18–21

Jesus had more to teach, and God had Luke record this in Luke 13:18–21, “So He was saying, ‘What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.’ 20 And again He said, ‘To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened.’” Many think Jesus used the two illustrations to show the growth of God’s kingdom, but that is not why He used the mustard seed and the leaven. In light of what Jesus had just taught, these two illustrations were used to warn against the corruption that would happen in His church. David Guzik points out: “the mustard seed plant grew unnaturally large, and it harbored birds – which, in previous parables, were emissaries of Satan (Matthew 13:4, Matthew 13:19).” Guzik also notes that “leaven is consistently used as a picture of sin and corruption (especially in the Passover narrative of Exodus 12:8, Exodus 12:15–20). Both the content and the context point towards this being a description of corruption in the kingdom community.” Just as the synagogue official revealed his corrupt heart, Jesus shared how His church would be threatened by corruption. This is evident in too many mainline denominations today, which is why we must continually abide in Christ and His Word.

Challenge & Application

How have you seen or heard of the corruption that has crept into mainline denominations? How do we stay protected from corruption affecting us or the church?

Day 1

Jesus was still teaching His disciples and the thousands of people who had gathered together to hear Him. God had Luke record this in Luke 13:1–5, “Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus said to them, ‘Do you suppose that these Ga...

Day 2

Jesus often taught using parables. God had Luke record one in Luke 13:6–9, “And He began telling this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any. 7 And he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree wit...

Day 3

Jesus taught daily, but He also made sure to be in a synagogue on the Sabbath to teach those who were there. God had Luke record the following in Luke 13:10–13, “And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had a sickness caused by a spirit; and she was bent double, and could...

Day 4

Jesus had just healed the woman who had been doubled over for eighteen long years. This miracle, like all others, was absolutely mind-blowing. But there was one in the synagogue that day whose heart was so hard that he missed the incredible gift God had given this woman. God had Luke record this in Luke 13:14, “But the synagogue official, ind...

Day 5

Jesus knew that the synagogue official’s heart was so hardened that he had fallen into the trap of trusting in nothing more than empty religion. God had Luke record Jesus’ response in Luke 13:15–16, “But the Lord answered him and said, ‘You hypocrites, does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him ...

Day 6

As Jesus rebuked the synagogue official, He asked, “Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to water him?” Jesus’ question was not complex or deep, but it was definitely to the point. Jesus wanted to know why someone could help an animal on the Sabbath, but they couldn’t help a person wh...
