Day 5

Scripture to Read: Luke 13:15–16

Jesus knew that the synagogue official’s heart was so hardened that he had fallen into the trap of trusting in nothing more than empty religion. God had Luke record Jesus’ response in Luke 13:15–16, “But the Lord answered him and said, ‘You hypocrites, does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to water him? 16 And this woman, a daughter of Abraham as she is, whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?’” Jesus did not deal with the synagogue official with the same compassion He gave to the woman. Jesus rebuked the synagogue official due to his hardened heart. If anyone should have shown compassion, it should have been the synagogue official, but his heart was hardened by holding on to religious traditions. He considered the Sabbath laws and customs more important than the people’s true needs. The woman who had been held in physical bondage by a demon had been set free, but the synagogue official had no clue he was in spiritual bondage to Satan and the demonic forces (2 Timothy 2:26). His anger got the best of him, and he had no clue that his anger was destroying him. It’s why God tells us in Ephesians 4:26–27, “Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not give the devil an opportunity.” We must not give the devil an opportunity in any area of our lives.

Challenge & Application

Jesus was still teaching His disciples and the thousands of people who had gathered together to hear Him. Day 2

Jesus often taught using parables. God had Luke record one in Luke 13:6–9, “And He began telling this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any. 7 And he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree wit...

Day 3

Jesus taught daily, but He also made sure to be in a synagogue on the Sabbath to teach those who were there. God had Luke record the following in Luke 13:10–13, “And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had a sickness caused by a spirit; and she was bent double, and could...

God had Luke record this in Luke 13:14, “But the synagogue official, ind...

Day 6

As Jesus rebuked the synagogue official, He asked, “Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to water him?” Jesus’ question was not complex or deep, but it was definitely to the point. Jesus wanted to know why someone could help an animal on the Sabbath, but they couldn’t help a person wh...

Day 7

Jesus had more to teach, and God had Luke record this in Luke 13:18–21, “So He was saying, ‘What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.’ 20 And again He said, ‘To wh...
