Scripture to Read: Luke 13:1–5
Jesus was still teaching His disciples and the thousands of people who had gathered together to hear Him. God had Luke record this in Luke 13:1–5, “Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus said to them, ‘Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate? 3 I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.’” Jesus used two different illustrations to prove a point. Most people lived with the mindset, and this is still true today, that good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people. Jesus spoke of two disasters: one at the hands of the evil ruler Pilate and the other a natural disaster. Jesus didn’t focus on why these people were killed, but instead focused on how their deaths related to everyone listening that day. Death is inevitable for everyone, and no one knows the day or time that they will die. Jesus said, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” Jesus wanted everyone to understand that once death occurred, it was too late to repent. Everyone has the choice to either repent and get right with God or not and perish.
Challenge & Application
Repentance is the key to surrendering to Christ, but daily repentance keeps us in right fellowship with the Lord, so, where would you say you are right now, and why?
How would you explain repentance to a lost individual?
