Scripture to Read: Luke 11:42–54
Jesus wanted the Pharisees and lawyers to see the true condition of their hearts, so, God had Luke record the woes to the scribes, Pharisees, and lawyers in Luke 11:42–54. Jesus first pointed out that though they tithed, it was hypocritical because they neglected God’s justice and love. Jesus also rebuked them for striving to be revered and famous among men. They loved their positions of authority and Jesus proclaimed a woe to anyone who held to that arrogant attitude. The Pharisees also sought to come across as super spiritual, but Jesus said they were like graves that were not seen. In the days of Jesus, if a person unknowingly walked over a grave, they were considered ceremonially unclean (Numbers 19:16). So, Jesus told them that their lives were keeping other Jews ceremonially unclean. Then, a lawyer spoke up, telling Jesus they felt insulted too. So, Jesus began to show them how dark and dead their hearts were as well. To be a lawyer meant he was known as an expert in the interpretation and application of the Law of Moses. Jesus rebuked him and all other lawyers of His day for laying heavy burdens on the Jewish people. Jesus also rebuked them for claiming to love the prophets of old while rejecting prophets like John the Baptist. Jesus even told them that they would persecute His disciples whom He would send to them and that those who rejected Him and His apostles and prophets would face a greater accountability. The problem with these people was their hardened hearts, for they simply plotted against Him.
