Day 4

Scripture to Read: Luke 11:29–32

Jesus continued teaching, and what He said next probably shocked most of those there. God had Luke record in Luke 11:29–32, “As the crowds were increasing, He began to say, ‘This generation is a wicked generation; it seeks for a sign, and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah. 30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation at the judgment and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.’” Remember what Luke had recorded in Luke 11:16, “Others, to test Him, were demanding of Him a sign from heaven.” Jesus answered their demand for a sign. He told them that the only sign they would receive was the sign of Jonah. Jonah’s three days in the fish (Jonah 1:17) is understood as a foreshadowing of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection after three days. Jesus linked the “sign of Jonah” to His resurrection in Matthew 12:39–40. Jesus wanted those people to understand that the repentant response of the Ninevites and of the Queen of the South would condemn them because they refused to believe that Jesus was God in the flesh.

Challenge & Application

What hinders many people today from repenting and fully believing in Christ as Lord? Even when people choose to reject Christ, why should we never stop sharing the truth of the gospel with this lost world?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus continually fulfilled the Father’s perfect will each day. Nothing Jesus did was by accident and nothing He said was haphazard. God had Luke record this in Luke 11:14–20, “And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute; when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed. 15 But some of them said, ‘He casts out d...

Day 2

Through the miracles He performed, Jesus showed people that He was God in the flesh. But even as He performed miracles, many still doubted. Since some of the people thought that Jesus cast out a demon by the power of another demon, Jesus then said this in Luke 11:21–23, “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions ar...

Day 3

Jesus wanted the crowd to understand that spiritual warfare is real. God had Luke record this in Luke 11:24–26, “When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. 26 T...

Day 5

Jesus used many illustrations in His teaching. God had Luke record this in Luke 11:33–36, “No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it ...

Day 6

Though Jesus had to rebuke the crowd several times, He loved them and sought to reach them so they’d understand He came to die for them. Luke even recorded this in Luke 11:37–40, “Now when He had spoken, a Pharisee *asked Him to have lunch with him; and He went in, and reclined at the table. 38 When the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised that ...

Day 7

Jesus wanted the Pharisees and lawyers to see the true condition of their hearts, so, God had Luke record the woes to the scribes, Pharisees, and lawyers in Luke 11:42–54. Jesus first pointed out that though they tithed, it was hypocritical because they neglected God’s justice and love. Jesus also rebuked them for striving to be revered and f...
