Scripture to Read: Luke 11:33–36
Jesus used many illustrations in His teaching. God had Luke record this in Luke 11:33–36, “No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it is bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 Then watch out that the light in you is not darkness. 36 If therefore your whole body is full of light, with no dark part in it, it will be wholly illumined, as when the lamp illumines you with its rays.” Jesus gave a warning against hiding the truth or even our faith. God has placed His Light in us through His Holy Spirit; what is meant to shine for others to see should always be visible. Jesus said, “The eye is the lamp of your body.” The eye represents how a person comes to know God. A clear “eye” allows God’s light to fill the whole person. This is someone who responds to God and His Truth, repents, and trusts in Christ as Lord. God then fills that person with His Holy Spirit to shine for Him. A person unwilling to receive and believe God’s Truth remains full of darkness. Outward appearance is not the focus; it is who the person is on the inside. A person full of Christ will shine for Him; a person dead in their sin is full of darkness.
Challenge & Application
Why should we never seek to hide God’s Truth or our faith in Him?
How does a person remain full of darkness even after hearing God’s gospel?
