Scripture to Read: John 3:9–15
Jesus did not let Nicodemus’ unbelief stop Him from challenging Nicodemus to the truth that he would have already known. We read in John 3:9–11, Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? 11 Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony.” Jesus challenged Nicodemus, for he would have known about the new birth since he taught God’s Law. God had used Ezekiel to prophesy about the new birth in Ezekiel 11:19–20, And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, 20 that they may walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and do them. Then they will be My people, and I shall be their God. Then we also find this in Ezekiel 36:26–27, Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. Jesus knew Nicodemus would have known these prophecies, yet Nicodemus acted as if he was ignorant. We also have God’s Truth; therefore, we must obey it without excuse.
Challenge & Application
• Why did Jesus challenge Nicodemus’ question, and what did Jesus expect from Nicodemus?
• What does our Lord expect from us, knowing that we have His Word and His Holy Spirit living in us?
