Scripture to Read: John 1:35–37
Our Lord Jesus Christ is the only One worthy of following. Though there are many people in this life that we look up to, no one is more worthy of following than Christ our Lord. To be Christ’s disciple means to be one of His followers. Disciple means “follower, believer, student, protege," so we must choose to follow the One True Lamb of God. John the Baptist had his own disciples, but his goal was not to have people follow him but instead to lead them to follow Christ as Lord of their lives. We read in John 1:35–37, “Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.” John the Baptist, seeing Jesus again, immediately proclaimed Christ as “the Lamb of God.” Without any hesitation, two of John the Baptist’s disciples immediately left John the Baptist and started following Jesus. John the Baptist had led these two men well, and these men made the best decision of their lives by choosing to follow our Lord. God has called us to “go and make disciples” in Matthew 28:19. Therefore, our goal must be the same as John the Baptist’s—to lead people to surrender their lives to Christ and to follow Him as their Lord. Once we are following Christ as Lord of our lives, there is no greater joy in this life than to help lead others to follow Christ as Lord as well.
