Day 4

Scripture to Read: John 13:21

Jesus was preparing His disciples for His imminent crucifixion, but the disciples were still clueless about what would happen even though Jesus did all He could to get them ready. So, we read in John 13:21, When Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me.” Jesus was “troubled,” which meant that He was deeply grieving. Jesus not only grieved over what He was about to face through His trial and crucifixion, but He grieved for the soul of Judas. Jesus loved Judas; He had chosen Judas to follow Him and wanted Judas to surrender to Him, but Jesus, knowing all things, knew Judas would not willingly surrender to Him. Jesus felt the grief of knowing He would lose Judas and that Judas would be Satan’s tool. The unconditional love that God, through Jesus Christ, has for His creation is unfathomable. God says it beautifully as He led Paul to write in Ephesians 3:7–8, of which I was made a minister, according to the gift of God’s grace which was given to me according to the working of His power. 8 To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ. It’s hard for us to understand the depth of God’s love, kindness, mercy, and grace toward all of us made in His image or the depth of His grief for those who refuse Him. Let’s obey Him and not bring Him anymore grieving (Ephesians 4:30).

Challenge & Application

• What encourages you about the grieving that Jesus had for Judas and for others still today? • How are you guarding your life from grieving God the Holy Spirit in you (Ephesians 4:30)?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

As Jesus spoke to His disciples, He knew Judas was the one who would betray Him. Jesus loved Judas and sought to reach him with His love, mercy, and forgiveness, but Judas was unwilling to repent and follow Jesus as his Lord. Jesus said in John 13:18, “I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture m...

Jesus also told the disciples in John 13:19, “From now on I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am He.” Jesus did not want His disciples to doubt that He was the promised Messiah foretold through the Old Testament Scriptures. Jesus knew that His mock trial and His crucifixion would take p...

Day 3

Jesus then added this statement as He spoke to His disciples in John 13:20, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” Remember, at this point, Judas is still sitting in the upper room with the other eleven disciples. Jesus had just told them in John 13:20 that H...

Day 5

Jesus telling the disciples that one of them would betray Him revealed again His omniscience, that He knew everything. However, the disciples still had no idea who would betray Jesus—this shows how Jesus never treated Judas differently than He had the other eleven. We read in John 13:22, The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss t...

Day 6

After John asked Jesus who would betray Him, Jesus responded in John 13:26, Jesus then *answered, “That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the morsel, He *took and *gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. For us reading this Scripture, we would think that it was obvious that Judas was th...

Day 7

Jesus displayed His love for Judas by washing his feet and treating him as an honored guest, but Judas’ heart was unrepentant. We read in John 13:27, After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus *said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” Jesus had given Judas a final chance to turn away from his sin, but he chose not to do so....
