Scripture to Read: John 10:16–18
Jesus also mentions “other sheep,” as He said in John 10:16–18, “I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. 18 No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.” The “other sheep” that Jesus was talking about were the Gentiles, including us today. Our Lord Jesus Christ has always had the entire world on His heart. We read in Hebrews 2:9, But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. Christ came to lay down His life so those who surrender to Him can have life. However, it is also noted that Jesus said He takes His life up again in both John 10:17 and 18. What a great reminder that Christ has all power, including all power over death. God the Father gave Christ the Son the commandment to lay down His life and to take it up again because He loves us that much. May all doubt be destroyed about the Father’s love for us through Christ!
