Scripture to Read: Hebrews 7:20-24
Today we see, again, why Christ is the Great High Priest and is Greater than all the priests who came through the family line of Aaron and Levi. The first thing God tells us is that Christ was appointed by God the Father as Great High Priest through an oath from God the Father. Why is this significant to us or the orig- inal readers of God’s Word? Because the priests, from the line of Levi, received the office of priest without
any oath. But our Lord Jesus Christ was designated by God the Father with an oath from God the Father who said to Christ, “The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind or regret it, ‘You (Christ) are a Priest forever’” (Psalm 110:4). God continually has the writer quote from Psalm 110:4 to confirm that this prophecy, writ- ten by King David, is a prophecy fulfilled through our Lord Jesus Christ. Then God, to make sure the Jewish Christians reading this letter knew and of course that we would know, because of the oath’s greater strength and force, because it’s from God the Father, confirms that Jesus is our Guarantee of a perfect covenant. God’s covenant, through Christ to all mankind, is more excel- lent and more favorable. God’s covenant is irreplaceable and cannot be broken. The priests who were from the line of Levi did exist in higher numbers because they each died, which kept them from serving forever. But Christ’s priesthood is permanent because Christ does live forever.
