Scripture to Read: Hebrews 7:11-19
God uses His Word to answer our ques- tions and to solidify His Truth to us so we’ll walk in obe- dience to Him daily. The question is asked in Hebrews 7:11, “Now if perfection [a perfect fellowship between God and the worshiper] had been attained through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people were given the Law) what further need was there for another and different kind of priest to arise, one in the manner of Melchizedek, rather than one appointed to the order
of Aaron?” (Amplified Version) Well, we know that “a perfect fellowship between God and the worshiper”
was NEVER established under the old covenant of the Law in the Old Testament. Also, since Christ was not from the family line of Levi but from the family line of Judah, there had to be a change of the Law concerning the priesthood. God has the writer remind all of us that Moses never mentioned anything about priests in con- nection with the tribe of Judah, but the change needed to happen. Christ became our High Priest, not based
on His ancestry but based on His power and His imper- ishable and everlasting life, for Christ alone defeated death on our behalf. That is why God said of Christ, “You are a Priest forever according to the order of Melchize- dek” (Psalm 110:4). Therefore, what the Law could not do, because of its weakness and inability to justify the sinner before God, Christ did for us. Christ is our hope, and He’s the reason why we can continually draw near to God.
