Scripture to Read: Hebrews 7:4-10
There is so much to unpack, so we con- tinue in Hebrews 7:4-10. God makes it perfectly clear that Melchizedek was greater than both Abraham and Levi. Melchizedek is greater because he received tithes from both Abraham and Levi (Hebrews 7:7-8). Accord- ing to Genesis 14:18-20, Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of his choicest spoils as an act of worship toward God and as an act of gratitude toward God for granting Abraham victory over the four kings he had defeat-
ed. Since Levi was Abraham’s great-grandson and had not even been born yet, how could Levi give a tithe to Melchizedek? In Hebrew culture, an ancestor contained in himself all of his descendants. Therefore, Levi, being a descendant of Abraham, was included in giving this tithe to Melchizedek. That is why God clearly states in Romans 5:12, that when Adam sinned, the entire human race sinned because we are all descendants of Adam; we’re all from the line of Adam (Hebrews 7:9-10). The main point in all of this is that if Melchizedek was great- er than Abraham and Levi (both considered great men in the Jewish faith) then Christ is even Greater than all of them! Remember, these new Jewish Christians need- ed to know that Christ was, is, and always will be God! We need this constant reminder as well. There are those who will challenge us, asking why Christ is the only way to God the Father; we must know it’s because Christ is Greater than all.
