Scripture to Read: Hebrews 7:1
We begin our walk through Hebrews 7 today. God, through the writer of Hebrews, identifies Melchizedek as both king of Salem and priest of the Most High God. Melchizedek, being called king of Sa- lem and also priest of the Most High God, is incredibly important. First, being both a king and a priest in Israel was never allowed by God because a person would then be holding too much power. So, Melchizedek was giv- en a special calling by God to be both king and priest. Second, the name “Melchizedek” means “king of righ- teousness,” but Melchizedek was also king of Salem and “Salem” means “peace,” so he is king of “peace” as well. Charles Spurgeon unpacks the name of Melchizedek and Melchizedek’s position as king and priest like this, “The order is subtle but important. First, Melchizedek, in his very name, was called “king of righteousness.” Then he was called “king of peace.” As always, righ- teousness comes before peace. Righteousness is the only true path to peace.” Pastor Steven J. Cole says this, “The order is significant: righteousness comes before peace. A king cannot have true peace in his kingdom unless both he and his kingdom are righteous. Sin brings discord and strife. Righteousness is the founda- tion for peace.” We must have Christ as our Lord and Savior for He is our righteousness, and through Him we are made righteous. Christ is also our Prince of Peace, and peace is only found by walking in obedience to Christ. So, as we walk in righteousness, we experience the fullness of His peace.
