Scripture to Read: Genesis 29:31-30:1-13
God begins to unveil to us His abundant favor being poured out on Leah. Though Leah was not Jacob’s first choice, as a wife, Leah was God’s choice. In Genesis 29:31-35, we read how God took care of Leah and blessed her to give Jacob his first four sons. It’s interesting to note that Leah’s lineage leads to our Messiah. Jesus was born of the tribe of Judah (Leah’s fourth-born son) as recorded in the genealogy of our Lord Jesus Christ in Luke 3:33-34. So, Leah carried the Messianic bloodline. Again, let’s always remember that physical appearance is irrelevant in God’s eyes. Also, we must remember that God’s plans and purpose are much bigger than ours. God tells us this in Isaiah 55:8-9, For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts. Having more than one wife was also never God’s plan. The fact that Jacob had Leah as his wife was enough, but Jacob’s fleshly “wants” also got him Rachel as his bride. The division, jealousy, hatred, and dysfunction this brought within Jacob’s family can be seen in Genesis 29 & 30. Could God have given Jacob his twelve sons through Leah alone? Absolutely! But we’ll never know what Jacob and Leah’s family would have looked like because Jacob chose to do things his way again.
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about His care for Leah and how He blessed her?
2. How are you seeking to walk in obedience to our Lord so that you also walk in His blessing (James 1:25)?
