Scripture to Read: Genesis 28
This week we see how Jacob is being challenged in ways he probably never expected. As a little reminder from Genesis 28 of what has happened in Jacob’s life: Issac had listened to Rebekah about sending Jacob to her brother Laban’s so Jacob could find a wife there and not from the Canaanites; of course, Rebekah knew that Esau wanted to kill Jacob. Esau was angry that Jacob had received the blessing from Isaac that Esau thought belonged to him. But, we know God ordained Jacob to receive Isaac’s blessing according to Romans 9:11-13, for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger.” 13 Just as it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” So Jacob left for Haran. On his way, Jacob finds a place to sleep for the night, and he encounters our Lord through a dream. God told Jacob that His promise to Abraham and Isaac was also for Jacob and all of his descendants. The Good News is that God showed Jacob His incredible GRACE, and God kept His promise. God showed such grace that He was willing to be called “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob” in Exodus 3:6. We can rest in the fact that God always keeps His promises no matter what challenges we face in this life.
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about His promises?
2. What promises from God, through His Holy Word, have given you rest and peace in times when things seemed overwhelming?
