Scripture to Read: Genesis 22:1-8
Genesis 22 is a familiar passage to many believers because it is the incredible story of how God tested Abraham. As we read Genesis 22, we must remember that the only way we grow in our faith is that our faith must be tested. God’s Word says in James 1:2-3, Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. So, we must have an attitude of joy in our tests and trials because the testing of our faith produces God’s endurance in us. Also, we’re to let God’s endurance mold us and shape us so we are perfect and complete in Christ, lacking in nothing. Our faith is the key to our daily fellowship with our Lord and King. We know faith is the key because without faith in Christ we can never please Him (Hebrews 11:6). In Genesis 22:3-8, Abraham obeyed the Lord completely. Abraham’s faith had grown quite a bit since he first heard the Lord at age 75. By this time in Genesis 22, Abraham is well over 100, so he had been growing in His faith for 35 plus years. We know this because Isaac was born when Abraham was 100, and in Genesis 22:6-7, Isaac was old enough to carry the wood and understand the significance of the burnt offering. We’ll see more tomorrow, but suffice it to say, Abraham’s faith had grown.
