Scripture to Read: Exodus 28:30
God told Moses (in Exodus 28:30) that he must place the Urim and the Thummim within the breastpiece of judgment so that they are over Aaron’s heart when he comes before the Lord. God was giving Aaron the responsibility to take His will and share it with the sons of Israel. The Urim and Thummim were one of the main ways God conveyed His perfect will to Israel. God also used dreams and His prophets to convey His will later on in the Old Testament (see 1 Samuel 28:6). The Urim and the Thummim were objects, possibly stones, used by the high priest to determine God's will. These objects are mentioned in Exodus 28:30, Leviticus 8:8, Deuteronomy 33:8, Ezra 2:63, and Nehemiah 7:65, but God’s Word never describes what they were or what they looked like. The Urim is mentioned by itself twice, in Numbers 27:21 and 1 Samuel 28:6, and both of these Scriptures are used in reference to God’s will. In Hebrew, Urim means “lights" and Thummim means “perfection,” so God would shine His light on His perfect will as the high priest came before Him on behalf of Israel. God’s Holy Spirit lives in us as Christians, and He guides us through God’s Word to walk according to His perfect will. God tells us in Romans 12:2 that we are not to conform to this world, but we must be transformed by renewing our minds through Christ and His Word and we will know His perfect will.
